U.S. Department of State Participates in Selection of University Partners for 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship
February 8, 2018
Washington, DC - - (February 7, 2017) - - The U.S. Department of State and its implementing partner, IREX, have selected 38 colleges and universities from across the United States to host the 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders this summer. These institutions have designed programs that will empower 1,000 young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa and their peers in the United States to build connections and develop skills needed to succeed in the globalized workforce.
Each 2017 Mandela Washington Fellow will complete a six-week Academic and Leadership Institute at one of the selected U.S. colleges and universities in one of the following areas: business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, or public management.
Launched in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), which embodies the United States’ commitment to invest in the future of Africa.
YALI began in 2010 to support young Africans as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. The Mandela Washington Fellowship brings young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and creates unique opportunities for fellows to put new skills to practical use as they lead their organizations and communities in Africa.
The 2017 Institute Partners represent the excellence and diversity of U.S. higher education. They include public and private institutions, minority serving institutions, large universities, and small colleges from across the United States.
