    Washington, DC - - (October 2, 2018) - - FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018. The WEA portion of the test, which will be sent to consumer cell phones, will begin at 2:18 p.m. EDT. The EAS portion of the test, which will be sent to radio and television, will follow at 2:20 p.m. EDT. This will be the fourth nationwide EAS test and the first nationwide WEA test.     (August 7, 2018) - - The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that Carol Gore is now serving as chair of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Racial, Ethnic and Other Populations.

    Ms. Gore is president and chief executive officer of Cook Inlet Housing Authority. She has served on the committee for five years including the past three years as NAC vice chair.



    Julie Dowling is now assuming the role of NAC vice chair. Dr. Dowling is an associate professor in the Department of Latina/Latino Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has served as a NAC member since 2014.

    As Secretary of Commerce, today I directed the National Marine Fisheries Service to facilitate access to the water needed to fight the ongoing wildfires affecting the State of California. One of the fires, the Mendocino Complex Fire, has developed into the largest in the state’s history, consuming nearly 300,000 acres in Northern California. American lives and property are at stake and swift action is needed. The Department of Commerce is doing everything possible to help, with NOAA satellites providing vital weather information and National Weather Service employees providing on the scene information to fire officials.

    The pilot guidance describes the process which tribal governments will use to request Stafford Act declarations and the criteria FEMA will use to evaluate direct tribal declaration requests and make recommendations to the President.

    Baton Rouge, LA - - (January 9, 2017) - - The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in Louisiana has spiked to more than 480,000 active policies following the March and August floods. That’s an increase of more than 35,000 policies.

    NFIP had the largest monthly increase of more than 20,000 policies from August to September last year. Ascension, East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes received the most damage from the 2016 floods and now account for more than 62,000 NFIP policies.

    In Louisiana, polices in 2015 dropped to approximately 454,000. In 2014, the number of active NFIP policyholders topped 472,000. In 2013 and 2012, the number of policies in effect remained at more than 483,000.

    More than 50 percent of structures flooded in August were located in low-and moderate-risk areas.
