COUNTERFEIT ETHICS

Ethics is the study of right and wrong actions. A civilization without a sound and reliable ethical base will spiral out of control. Many stabs at establishing a system of ethics have been made. Various codes of ethics have been established. Some of the codes have worked fairly well; however, there are still many ethical problems that many societies have not been able handle.

The Twenty-First Century has seen the springing up of various titles that embody some variation of the word "ethics". Included among these is the title "biotech ethicist". Apparently, the "biotech ethicist" deals with issues that arise in the field of biotechnology. That the profession recognizes the vital importance of ethics is laudable. Further, that an effort would be made to address the complexities of the discipline is commendable. What is more important, however, is the source of the foundation of the philosophy that gives rise to that particular system of ethics. The source of the ethics one imbibes is just as important as the source of the water one drinks. Water from a poisonous well is deadly. Likewise, ethics from a poisonous source are deadly.
