    Information contained in U.S. Social Security Administration press release dated: October 4, 2022 Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi announced that the Social Security Administration (SSA) established an Office of Native American Partnerships within the Office of the Commissioner. This office will elevate and centralize efforts to administer comprehensive programs and policies related to American Indians and Alaska Natives.     The Federal Trade Commission’s annual report to Congress on protecting older adults, issued today, provides a detailed look at the scams that most often affect adults over 60, as well as the FTC’s research, law enforcement, and education efforts aimed at protecting older consumers—a top priority for the agency.

    As part of the FTC’s efforts to understand how fraud is affecting older adults, the report, Protecting Older Consumers 2019-2020: A Report of the Federal Trade Commission, includes analysis of FTC consumer complaint data. In 2019, as in prior years, older adults (aged 60 and older) were less likely than younger adults (aged 20 to 59) to report losing money to fraud, but reported much higher individual dollar losses.     (November 22, 2019) - - Today, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service published the following information:

    WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service recently awarded more than $9.8 million in Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) grants to organizations that provide free federal tax return preparation.

    This year, the IRS awarded grants to 27 TCE applicants from across the nation. The TCE grants cover one year. The IRS received 37 applications requesting $11.7 million. The TCE program, established in 1978, provides tax counseling and return preparation nationwide to people who are 60 or older. Volunteers receive training and technical assistance. The IRS forms partnerships with a wide variety of organizations across the country to develop TCE programs.     (October 11, 2018) - - Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 67 million Americans will increase 2.8 percent in 2019, the Social Security Administration announced today. The 2.8 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 62 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2019. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 31, 2018. (Note: some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits). The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
