    (January 8, 2020) - - Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics published Trends in Opioids Prescribed at Discharge From Emergency Departments Among Adults: United States, 2006–2017. This is a detailed study of trends in opioid prescribing at emergency department (ED) discharge among adults from 2006–2007 through 2016–2017, by selected patient and hospital characteristics and the type of opioids prescribed.     Highway Deaths Account for 95 Percent of all Transportation Fatalities in 2017



    (November 1, 2018) - - Highway crashes claimed the lives of 37,133 people in 2017, accounting for 95 percent of the 38,958 who died in transportation related accidents that year, according to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and released Thursday by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The data indicate 712 fewer people died in transportation accidents in 2017, compared to the 39,670 who died in 2016. Aviation, marine and highway deaths decreased while rail and pipeline fatalities increased. Rail experienced the largest increase with 58 more deaths in 2017 than the 703 fatalities in 2016. While 673 fewer people died in highway crashes in 2017 compared to 2016, highway fatalities continued to represent 95 percent of all transportation fatalities....

    Washington, DC - - (April 25, 2018) - - As the nation celebrates National Park Week, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke today announced that visitor spending in communities near national parks in 2017 resulted in a $35.8 billion benefit to the nation’s economy--a nearly $1 billion increase from 2016-- and supported 306,000 jobs.

    Washington, DC - - (March 7, 2017) - - U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross issued the following statement today on the release of the January 2017 U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services monthly data. The trade deficit in January stood at $48.5 billion, a 9.6 percent increase from December. U.S. imports of goods and services increased to $240.6 billion in January from $235.3 billion in December. U.S. exports of goods and services increased to $192.1 billion in January from $191.0 billion in December.

    In January 2017, the trade deficit for goods and services was 11.8 percent higher as compared to January 2016, increasing from $43.4 billion to $48.5 billion.     2017 Tax Filing Season Opens Today

    Washington, DC - - (January 23, 2017) - - The Internal Revenue Service said today that it successfully started accepting and processing 2016 federal individual income tax returns on schedule. More than 153 million returns are expected to be filed this year.

    People have until Tuesday, April 18, 2017 to file their 2016 returns and pay any taxes due. The deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 deadline falls on Saturday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the following Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a D.C. holiday, is observed on Monday, April 17, giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law, D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 to file.

    Washington, DC - - (January 23, 2017) - - The Internal Revenue Service said today that it successfully started accepting and processing 2016 federal individual income tax returns on schedule. More than 153 million returns are expected to be filed this year.

    People have until Tuesday, April 18, 2017 to file their 2016 returns and pay any taxes due. The deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 deadline falls on Saturday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the following Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a D.C. holiday, is observed on Monday, April 17, giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law, D.C. holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 to file.
