    U.S. Department of Commerce Initiates Section 232 Investigation into Auto Imports



    (May 23, 2018) - - The U.S.Department of Commerce published the following information: Today, following a conversation with President Donald J. Trump, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross initiated an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended. The investigation will determine whether imports of automobiles, including SUVs, vans and light trucks, and automotive parts into the United States threaten to impair the national security as defined in Section 232.     "President Trump has announced a critical decision that reinforces the importance of the aluminum and steel industries with respect to the national security of the United States. These tariffs are a necessary tool to strengthen both our economic and national security. The president has made clear his consideration to grant certain exemptions. Secretary Ross will also lead a process that could result in exemptions on specific products."
