    Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of Oman, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, to express his deepest condolences on the death of Sultan Qaboos. The Secretary described the late sultan as a visionary leader for Oman and a great strategic friend of the United States. The two affirmed the importance of our long-term strategic friendship, discussed building on the legacy of the visionary leader with his successor, and agreed on the need for continued, close engagement to advance peace and security in the region. A senior U.S. delegation will travel to Oman to pay our respects.

During the meeting, Secretary Pompeo conveyed his condolences for the victims of the recent flooding in Jordan and reaffirmed the United States’ steadfast support for Jordan. Secretary Pompeo underscored the importance of the bilateral relationship between our two countries, thanked King Abdullah for his efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East, and sought King Abdullah’s views on regional developments and other matters of mutual interest.

    Secretary Pompeo also congratulated King Abdullah on his receipt of the 2018 Templeton Prize.
